Apart from football, the department of culture and sports at the District has initiated several games including Basket ball, Volley Ball, Cross country marathon and others. The District is emphasisng the promotion of sports especially in schools.

Social centers are being built to support plays, promotion of music and indoor games. There have been inter sector competitions together with other games but these have been mostly done in schools.

The Mayor says that sports can definitely play a role in addressing politics in a number of ways. Just recent genocide and genocide idiologies that was caused by tribal diferances can be rooted out if sports and plays are given much consideration. Like football which is so globally popular means that lots of people want to use it positively. Israel is a good example, as they have anti-racism campaigns promoting tolerance between Israeli and Arab players, they use the football grounds and the players as role models to try and change public opinion.

Football is such a global commodity, such a big global force that generates so much tension, passion and interest and this means that it will always be used as a political tool.

At our grass-roots level, it’s something that we aim to do. One thing we are keen on is how our district officials work can affect policy change in certain Sectors by introducing more sports activities. When our officials are doing particularly good work and are achieving a social impact we look how this can be translated into local policy.

Eventually, each of these sectors will become a hub for development in sports, education and health. The important thing about the sectors is that they will support the existing work of local teams, many of which are streetfootball members. This is not a top-down, but very much a bottom-up approach. That is going to be the real tangible legacy of the vision 2020, and that’s a big part of what we will be doing in Kirehe district and beyond.
