Education

Education in schools is a need to satisfy a basic human right, a strong factor in economic and social development of a country. It is thus, important to notice the big role played by schools in Kirehe district’s development programme. Being also a reason why the government has made education one of its priorities for vision 2020 manifesto.

In Kirehe District, Kagera and Gahara sectors, the ratio of pupils per teacher at the elementary school level is still high at 110:1. The rate of teacher qualification in elementary schools remains relatively high in Kirehe district reaching 98% compared to government indicators which showed 72% in year 2000. The rate of transition from elementary school to secondary school remains very low. It is at 43% whereas the national average, in 2005-2006, was at 61%.

At the secondary school level, the ratio of teacher to students is not very high, contrary to elementary school level as we have just seen above. Indeed the number of pupil per desk remains at 2. On the other hand the number of qualified teachers and the rate of school dropouts remain worrying.
The listed total of illiterates goes up to 10.480 people; this constitutes 4.5% of the district population. Those who have registered for illiteracy courses are estimated at 3,585 people. It should also be noted that Kirehe District has 66 centers of training illiterates.
